Ironman Actor And Oscar-Winner Robert Downey Jr Threatens To Upstage Sting When He Sings Lead On A Police Favourite

Robert Downey Jr.’s performance at Sting’s 60th birthday celebration continues to amaze music fans. Many are surprised, exclaiming, “Iron Man can sing—like that?!” Despite the praise, Downey Jr. remains humble when discussing his long-standing friendship with Sting. He recalls first meeting Sting in his mid-20s, convinced at the time that he was a great songwriter. In a bold move, he tried to hand Sting a demo cassette on a stairwell after one of Sting’s concerts, leaving the legendary musician a bit taken aback.

Sting’s wife, Trudy Styler, recognized Robert Downey Jr. from *Less Than Zero* and warmly greeted the young actor, saying, “How nice of you to come.” Sting and Trudy didn’t mention the demo tape until 25 years later, when they told Downey they had found it and asked if he wanted it back. With his trademark humor, Downey quipped that if they listened to it, they should have rewound the cassette and taped the case closed again. Luckily, this didn’t hinder Sting from including Downey in the lineup at his birthday fundraiser in 2011.

When Downey starts singing, I’m reminded of longtime E-Street Band guitarist and solo artist Nils Lofgren, known for his uniquely recognizable voice. Others draw comparisons to Robert Palmer. In the comments, Geena 99 captures the surprise, saying, “Brilliant! A true artist! Who knew Mr. Tony Stark had a voice like this and could tackle Sting’s challenging songs?” Equally impressed, 850thx writes, “I’ve listened to this song dozens of times; what can’t this man do?” And D Miles sums it up simply: “Speechless! I had no idea.”
