Little Boy Pleads with Mom’s Boss for a Day Off, Next Day the Boss Arrives with a Bouquet – Story of the Day
|Ten-year-old Jack lived with his single mother, Debra. He had never met his father, and Debra had always been both mom and dad to him. To make ends meet, Debra worked as a cleaner at a large company, toiling seven days a week without a single day off. She refused to take any time for herself because every dollar counted when it came to providing for her son.
Though Debra tried to hide her exhaustion, the toll of working nonstop was evident. Cleaning an entire multi-floor building was no easy task, and her body ached from the relentless labor. One evening, as Jack was playing in the living room, he noticed his mother sitting on the front porch, her shoulders shaking as she cried quietly into her phone.
Peeking out through the window, Jack overheard his mom’s conversation. “I’m so tired, Emily,” Debra sobbed. “I just want to rest, but I can’t. I barely make enough to take care of Jack and pay the bills. I can’t afford to take any days off.”
Hearing this broke Jack’s heart. He felt responsible for his mother’s fatigue and desperately wanted to help. That night, he lay in bed, unable to sleep, thinking about what he could do to ease his mom’s burden.
The next day, Jack made a decision. After school, instead of going home, he headed straight to the company where his mother worked. When he entered the building, the receptionist greeted him with a smile. “Hello, Jack. Are you looking for your mom?”
Jack shook his head. “No, ma’am. Please don’t tell my mom that I’m here. I need to see her boss, Mr. Jefferson,” he said, his voice full of determination.
The receptionist was surprised but moved by the boy’s earnest request. After a brief hesitation, she called Mr. Jefferson’s office to let him know about the unexpected visitor.
Mr. Jefferson agreed to see Jack, and the receptionist led him to the office. When Jack entered, he suddenly felt nervous, but he knew he had to be brave for his mom. Mr. Jefferson, a tall, imposing man, smiled kindly at the boy and gestured for him to sit down.
“To what do I owe the pleasure, young man?” Mr. Jefferson asked, curious.
Jack took a deep breath. “Sir, I’m Jack. My mom, Debra, works here as a cleaner,” he began, his voice wavering slightly. “I’m here to ask if you could please give my mom some paid days off. She’s really tired, but she won’t take any time off because she says she needs the money to take care of me.”
Mr. Jefferson was taken aback by the boy’s request. He knew Debra was a dedicated worker, but he hadn’t realized how much she was sacrificing. “I know your mom works hard, Jack, and we’re grateful for her service. But I’m surprised to hear that she’s this exhausted and still refuses to take a day off. Are things difficult at home?”
Jack nodded. “It’s just me and my mom. She works so hard to pay the bills and take care of me. I heard her crying yesterday because she’s so tired. I just want her to have a break,” Jack said, tears welling up in his eyes.
At that moment, a soft voice piped up from the corner of the room. Jack hadn’t noticed that Mr. Jefferson’s daughter, who was the same age as him, was there too.
“Dad, I know what he’s talking about,” she said. “You’re always at work, and you hardly spend time with me. Jack just wants more time with his mom, like I want more time with you.”
Mr. Jefferson was stunned by his daughter’s words. He realized he had been so focused on work that he had neglected his own family. Seeing the situation from Jack’s perspective hit him hard.
Moved by both his daughter and Jack, Mr. Jefferson made a decision. He called his chauffeur to drive Jack home and assured the boy that he would help his mom.
The next day, Debra was called into Mr. Jefferson’s office. Nervously, she sat down, wondering what this meeting could be about.
“Your son came to see me yesterday, Debra,” Mr. Jefferson began, watching her carefully. “He told me some things that were quite surprising.”
Debra’s heart sank, her mind racing with worry. “Please, sir, I’m so sorry if he said anything wrong. He’s just a boy—”
Mr. Jefferson interrupted her gently. “You’re not in trouble, Debra. In fact, quite the opposite. I’ve decided it’s time for a change—for both you and me.”
Debra looked at him, confused. “What do you mean, sir?”
“You’ve been working nonstop, and it’s clearly taking a toll on you,” Mr. Jefferson said. “But you shouldn’t be doing this alone. Our kids won’t be young forever, and I’ve realized I’ve been missing out on important moments with my own daughter. So, I’ve made a decision.”
He reached under his desk and pulled out a bouquet of flowers. “You’re not fired, Debra. Far from it. I want you to take some time off—paid, of course—and I’d like to invite you and Jack to join my family on a vacation. All expenses paid.”
Debra was speechless. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “I don’t know what to say… I can’t afford to take time off, let alone go on vacation,” she stammered.
Mr. Jefferson smiled warmly. “You don’t need to worry about that. I’m offering you a new job—working for my family. You and Jack can move into a cottage on our estate. You’ll work a few hours a day, and the rest of the time is yours to spend with your son. You’ve raised an incredible young man, Debra. It’s time you both had a break.”
Tears filled Debra’s eyes as she accepted the flowers. “Thank you, sir. This means more to me than you’ll ever know.”
For the first time in years, Debra and Jack were able to go on a vacation. They traveled to the Bahamas with Mr. Jefferson’s family, and when they returned, they moved into a beautiful cottage on his estate—a place they had only dreamed of.
Debra couldn’t believe their luck. She finally had the time to rest and enjoy life with her son, all thanks to Jack’s bravery and a kind-hearted boss who recognized the importance of family.
