Country Singer Spencer Hatcher’s Mother Tragically Killed in Virginia Home Invasion

The country music community is rallying around singer Spencer Hatcher after a devastating tragedy claimed the life of his mother, Holly Hatcher, and left his father, Michael, injured during a violent home invasion in Virginia on August 3.

When deputies arrived at the Hatchers’ residence, Michael appeared outside with visible injuries. The suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker, was found deceased in the driveway. 6 News reports that Walker was killed after Michael Hatcher took a handgun out of his vehicle and fired one shot in an effort to stop Walker.

62-year-old Holly Hatcher, a well-respected teacher in the area, was found inside the home with fatal stab wounds. Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson spoke about the brutality of the crime, saying, “I’ve been in law enforcement for 31 years and I have never seen anything like this in my entire career.”

Speaking about the offender, Kevin Moses Walker, Sheriff Hutcheson said, “This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind.”

Investigators say Walker had been staying at a nearby campground since August 1, visiting local attractions and purchasing a sleeping bag and a large knife before breaking into the Hatcher home. The motive remains unclear.

In a heartfelt statement on social media, Spencer announced the cancellation of upcoming shows, writing:

“It is with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that—due to a monumental loss in our family—I must cancel my upcoming shows… I appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones. We ask that everyone please respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Michael Hatcher expressed gratitude for the public’s outpouring of love, saying it has made this tragedy “much more bearable.”

Spencer, who grew up in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, first made waves in bluegrass before transitioning to country music. Known for his viral covers and original songs, he recently signed with Stone Country Records and partnered with PepsiCo for a Mountain Dew campaign. Just weeks before the tragedy, he released his latest single, “When She Calls Me Cowboy.”

Holly Hatcher’s influence on her family’s music was profound—she played organ and piano, while her husband played guitar and banjo. Together with their sons, they formed The Hatcher Boys, a family band that shared their love of music with the community.

As fans, friends, and fellow musicians share their condolences, Spencer’s words serve as a reminder of the deep love at the center of his family’s life—a love that will continue to guide him forward.

May Holly Hatcher rest in peace.
