LeAnn Rimes Shines with “O Holy Night” at Macy’s Great Tree Lighting, Continuing a 65-Year Christmas Tradition

The holiday season is the perfect time to remember our cherished Christmas moments. In 2008, a packed crowd in Atlanta, Georgia, was treated to a stunning rendition of “O Holy Night” by LeAnn Rimes during the Macy’s Great Tree lighting.

From 1948 to 2013, the lighting of the Macy’s Great Tree was a beloved Thanksgiving night tradition. Each year, as the final high note of “O Holy Night” rang out, the giant cut pine was illuminated in all its glory, remaining lit every evening until New Year’s Eve.

Sadly, the tradition ended in 2013 following several incidents where the tree caused damage to the Macy’s store below. Despite its conclusion, the Great Tree lighting remains a cherished holiday memory for many.

LeAnn Rimes was one of many famous musicians and local groups who had the honor of performing at this cherished ceremony over the years. She also recorded “O Holy Night” for her 2004 holiday album What A Wonderful World.

The Story Behind “O Holy Night”

“O Holy Night” began as a French poem and was later set to music in 1847. Music critic John Sullivan Dwight adapted it into English. The Christmas ballad reflects on the profound moment Christ was born:

“A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees, oh, hear the angel voices
O night divine, O night when Christ was born.”

Over time, “O Holy Night” became a beloved holiday classic, recorded and performed by countless artists—including Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, and Trisha Yearwood.
