Sharon Osbourne Weeps as Ozzy’s Funeral Procession Winds Through Birmingham

The magnitude of Ozzy Osbourne’s influence became unmistakably clear as throngs of fans flooded Birmingham’s streets to honor the late Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. Ozzy, 76, passed away on July 22, leaving a legacy that drew “tens of thousands” to his public funeral procession ahead of a private family service scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, in his hometown.

Beginning near the famed Black Sabbath Bridge and Bench—now draped in flowers, handwritten notes, and other tributes—the procession wound its way through Birmingham before converging at the Black Sabbath Bench. Purple floral arrangements spelling out “OZZY” adorned the hearse, while the crowd chanted his name in unison: “Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy!”

One of the day’s most poignant moments came when Ozzy’s widow, Sharon Osbourne, stepped from her car with their three children—Aimee, Kelly, and Jack—just as a live band launched into “Crazy Train.” Overcome with emotion, Sharon clung to her children, thanking fans with a teary smile and a double peace sign before laying flowers at a memorial site. She also embraced Birmingham’s Lord Mayor, Zafar Iqbal, in a brief but tender exchange of gratitude.

The entire procession was livestreamed, giving fans worldwide a chance to pay respects from afar. A book of condolence remains open at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which is currently hosting an exhibit celebrating Ozzy’s life and music.

Our thoughts are with Sharon, the Osbourne family, and everyone who loved the “Prince of Darkness” as they navigate life without him—and with the indelible mark he left on rock history.
