Lady Gaga Breaks Silence on Early Rumors Claiming She Was a Man: “I Tried to Be Provocative in a Different Way”

Lady Gaga was plagued by rumors early in her career claiming she was a man, and the pop icon has finally addressed them, saying, “I tried to be provocative in a different way.”

In a recent appearance on the second episode of *What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates*, the 38-year-old singer explained why she never bothered to deny the claims. Gaga shared that she intentionally left the rumors unaddressed, opting to focus on her artistry rather than public speculation about her gender.

Reflecting on her decision, Gaga cited a 2011 interview with CNN, where she famously stated, “Why the hell would I waste my time and issue press statements about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care, and neither do I.”

In true Gaga fashion, she embraced the controversy as part of her effort to challenge conventional ideas and provoke thought in unexpected ways.

Now, 13 years later, Lady Gaga has revisited the topic.

“When I was in my early twenties, there were rumors circulating that I was a man. As I traveled the world, went on tours, and promoted albums, almost every interview brought up these rumors, asking for my response,” Gaga shared with Bill Gates. “I chose not to respond because I never felt like a victim of that lie.”

“Addressing the rumors wasn’t in my best interest,” Lady Gaga emphasized.

“But I did think about it. What about the child who might be facing similar accusations and wondering if a public figure like me should feel ashamed? There were photoshopped images circulating online, and people would ask, ‘You know there’s a rumor that you’re a man—what do you have to say about that?’” Gaga recalled.

“I found myself in situations where correcting the rumors wasn’t the right move—I was more concerned with the impact it could have on others. So instead, I decided to be provocative in a different way. I used the misinformation to my advantage,” she concluded, as reported by Index.hr.
