|Tom Selleck is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, having played numerous memorable roles that have secured him a special place in the hearts of many Americans.
Off-screen, Selleck leads a fulfilling personal life in a home where he has resided for many decades. Read on to discover more about Tom Selleck’s life away from the camera.
Tom Selleck has embraced the life of a rancher for over 30 years in California. He resides on a ranch with his wife and has mentioned how this lifestyle contributes to his sanity.
Born in Detroit in January 1945, the actor began his career in the entertainment industry in the 1960s with minor roles in television and films. However, it wasn’t until the hit series “Magnum, PI” that he achieved significant fame and success. In the show, Selleck portrayed Thomas Magnum, a private investigator based in Hawaii, a role he played for eight years and which won him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor.
The actor revealed that he left “Magnum, PI” because he felt worn out by the series and sought a more fulfilling life. After departing the show in 1987, he married his second wife, Jillie Joan Mack. He has often praised Mack, a former dancer and actress from England, for her vibrant personality and the “joie de vivre” she brings to any room.
A year after their marriage, the couple purchased a ranch in Ventura, California, previously owned by Dean Martin. The property boasts over 1,500 native trees, offering a serene and natural retreat for the couple.
Selleck and Mack have been married for over 30 years, and they welcomed their daughter, Hannah, in 1988. They chose the ranch as a wonderful place for Hannah to grow up, valuing the lifestyle and environment it offered.
The actor made his marriage a priority to enrich his personal life. He explained that taking time away from Hollywood to focus on his home life significantly bolstered his marriage.
Although the slower pace of ranch life has been beneficial for his personal well-being, maintaining the property is challenging. Selleck personally takes on various tasks around the ranch, from fixing roads to clearing bushes.
The drought in California took a toll on his avocado crops. While in 2007, the actor shared that selling avocados had been very profitable, just a few years later, he noted that earning a living from his avocado farming had become challenging.
However, the situation became controversial when Selleck and his wife were accused of illegally taking “truckloads of water” from a hydrant serving a construction site near their home. The Calleguas Municipal Water District alleged that Selleck used a large water tender truck to transport water from the hydrant to his property, with around 12 such trips reported over two years. It remained uncertain whether additional trips went undetected, leaving the total amount of water taken unclear.
The authorities issued two cease-and-desist letters to the actor in late 2013, which he reportedly ignored, continuing to take water. Subsequently, Selleck was ordered to pay $21,000 to cover the costs of the private investigation launched against him, along with additional funds to compensate for the damages incurred. He was also prohibited from further extracting water from the Calleguas Municipal Water District for his personal use.
The actor appears to be thoroughly content with his ranch lifestyle in California. It’s wonderful to see that he has found such a peaceful ‘retreat’ where he can relax and truly be himself. We’re delighted for him and his fulfilling life away from the spotlight.
