Whenever the thought crosses my mind of those capable of inflicting harm upon helpless animals, callously abandoning them to face a grim fate, a wave of sorrow envelops me. Fortunately, amid such darkness, there emerge unsung heroes, and two individuals deserving special recognition are Bret Winingar and his son, Zach.
On a leisurely motorcycle ride through the quiet back roads surrounding Little Rock, Arkansas, Bret and Zach stumbled upon an old, forsaken dog carrier. Intrigued by their discovery, they decided to investigate further, only to be confronted by a heart-wrenching sight – a severely malnourished dog trapped within the confines of the dilapidated carrier.
The squalor of the carrier, smeared with feces, bore witness to the animal’s desperate struggle for freedom, as evidenced by a hole chewed into the enclosure, a poignant testament to the dog’s resilient spirit.
Temporarily parting ways with the distressed canine, the father and son took a moment to strategize and assess the best course of action.
Returning swiftly, this time in a car laden with provisions, including nourishing dog food and thirst-quenching water, the compassionate father and son were determined to alleviate the suffering of their newfound furry friend.
In a heartfelt gesture of camaraderie and newfound connection, Bret and Zach christened the rescued canine with the name “Charlie Bravo,” symbolizing strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
The canine began expressing gratitude to those who saved her even before they arrived home.
Bret and Zach’s initial task was to trim Charlie Bravo’s claws, which had become excessively long during her time in the cage, causing discomfort as they curled inward and impeded her ability to walk. Following the nail trim, the next step was to give her a much-needed bath.
Then, they took Charlie to the vet.
The veterinarian estimated Charlie’s age to be around eight months. Judging by the wounds on her body, it was suggested that she had endured a prolonged period in the carrier.
Charlie Bravo’s tale gained rapid traction on Facebook, prompting generous individuals to contribute donations. Bret and Zach began receiving financial support from compassionate souls eager to assist in covering Charlie’s veterinary expenses.
Bret and his family directed the surplus donations toward several animal charities and established a new fund dedicated to rescued animals, aptly named “Charlie’s Angels.”
Despite initially not considering keeping Charlie, Bret found himself unable to part with the dog. Since rescuing Charlie, Bret and his family have extended their compassion further by adopting three additional rescued dogs into their home.
