Lauren and Kaylee Thomas: Championship-Winning Sisters Who Dance in Perfect Sync
|There are countless talented dancers online, showcasing everything from ballroom to tap, street to morris dancing. But every now and then, a performance comes along that takes you by surprise—like that of Lauren and Kaylee Thomas, championship-winning clog dancers. If you’re unfamiliar with clogging, the Ridge Runner Cloggers describe it as “an energetic percussive style of dance where the dancer wears shoes with special taps attached.” It’s a lively and popular sport, and if this is your first encounter with it, Lauren and Kaylee’s performance is the perfect introduction.
The video below is from the 2016 Clogging Champions of America Showdown of Champions and captures the contemporary portion of the competition, though the sisters also competed in the traditional category. It’s a duet dance-off, and the girls are simply mesmerizing.
At first glance, you might mistake them for twins, but Kaylee is actually two years older than Lauren. Both blonde and adorably in sync, they often dress in matching outfits, making it easy to see why they’re so often confused. One thing is certain though: their feet move like lightning!
As the video begins, six pairs are lined up on stage for the dance-off. Lauren and Kaylee are front and center, dazzling in black tops and sparkly pants. Though other duos are performing, it’s impossible to take your eyes off these two. Every kick, spin, and arm twist is executed with perfect precision, their energy seemingly boundless throughout the complex routine.
It comes as no surprise that this isn’t their first competition—far from it. The sisters have won national championships a staggering fifteen times! They may not look old enough to have achieved such success, but they’ve been at it since they were little. Born in Berea, Kentucky, Lauren began clogging at just three years old, while Kaylee was five when she first started.
The girls’ natural talent quickly became apparent, and they soon dominated local competitions, eventually progressing to national stages. While clogging exists in various forms around the world, the style performed by Lauren and Kaylee is unique to the U.S., meaning international competitions aren’t on the horizon. But between school and downtime, this might be a blessing in disguise.
Their talent hasn’t been confined to competitions, either. Lauren and Kaylee have appeared on shows like Nickelodeon’s *Figure It Out* and a reboot of *The Gong Show*, all while still being kids for most of their career. Many siblings would struggle with spending so much time training together, but Lauren and Kaylee’s bond is strengthened by their mutual love of dance.
As they grow older, their lives may take different paths, but their shared passion for clogging will surely keep them connected. If you can’t get enough of this talented duo, check out their performance to a medley from *The Greatest Showman*.
