Helen Mirren believed that the bikini snapshot her husband captured of her on the beach would remain a private, intimate moment – but internet didn’t listen

Helen Mirren has amassed a legion of fans over her more than 50-year career as an actress, and her dedication to aging naturally has only increased her popularity.

Mirren began her career in the entertainment industry as a theater actress, becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company before making her West End debut in London in 1975.

Although she is now 78, Helen Mirren didn’t become a household name until later in life. She was 35 when she landed her breakout role as a gangster’s girlfriend in ‘The Long Good Friday’ (1980), starring opposite Bob Hoskins.

For much of her adult life, Mirren focused on her career, with little consideration for settling down or starting a family. That perspective shifted when she met her future husband, US film director Taylor Hackford.

“I was 38 when I met Taylor, which is pretty late in life,” Mirren shared in a 2016 AARP interview, remembering how Hackford had made her wait for an audition when they first met. After she eventually won the role, the two spent more time together, and their relationship developed from there.

Over time, Mirren and Hackford discovered they shared similar backgrounds in the working class—her mother came from a family of butchers, while Mirren’s father was a Russian aristocrat who fled to the UK during the Russian Revolution and became a cab driver to support his family. These common roots helped strengthen their bond.

The future spouses also bonded over their love for traveling, and apparently had a similar view on storytelling, both being in the entertainment industry.

Although Hackford’s two children from previous marriages were supportive of Mirren’s relationship with their father, this did not alter her decision against becoming a mother herself. However, she did find Hackford’s commitment to being an exemplary parent to his children quite endearing.

The pair eventually married in 1997, after they came to the realization that they knew they would be together forever. At that point, they’d been together for over a decade.

The Infamous Swimsuit Photo

Fast forward to 2008, and Mirren became an internet sensation due to a beach photo taken by her husband, a moment that surprised fans and the actress herself.

The couple was enjoying a romantic getaway on an Italian beach when they ventured to a secluded spot to appreciate the stunning views in privacy.

Mirren recalled taking a photo of her husband, after which he returned the favor by snapping a quick picture of her. At that moment, as Mirren posed and sucked in her stomach, she noticed a small flash in the distance. Thinking it was a paparazzo, she quickly crouched behind the rocks to hide.

When she mentioned it to her husband, he dismissed it, thinking she was just being “paranoid.” However, that photo of Mirren in a red bikini was indeed captured by a tabloid and quickly went viral.

Years later, on Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show, Mirren commented on the image, “I look at that picture and say, ‘God, I wish I looked like that.’ But I don’t.”

Years on, the photo of Mirren, who was 63 at the time, continues to astonish, with many online expressing envy at her appearance, noting that they don’t look nearly as good despite being decades younger!

In 2014, the Oscar winner spoke about the image just before her 68th birthday, telling People: “The truth is I don’t really look that good, it was just a flattering picture.”

She added: “I am beyond the bikini-wearing age, really. I wouldn’t normally wear one. I look like a woman in her 60s. I’ve always looked awful in a bikini, even when I was young.”
