For any country artist, singing with Dolly Parton is a dream come true—and for Carrie Underwood, that dream became a reality in 2009.

Dolly Parton on Whitney Houston’s Iconic Cover

Parton originally wrote “I Will Always Love You” in 1973, but the song gained worldwide fame when Whitney Houston recorded a powerful version for The Bodyguard in 1992.

In a 2022 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Parton shared the unforgettable moment she first heard Houston’s rendition.

“I was just driving along with the radio on, and suddenly, I heard, ‘If I should stay…’ It was like a dog hearing a whistle—I froze and thought, ‘What is that?’” she recalled.

Parton was completely unprepared for the moment, admitting, “They hadn’t sent it to me or anything. I just heard it on the radio. And when she hit ‘And I…’ I lost it. I had to pull over because I thought I was going to wreck. It was the most overwhelming feeling. You know how powerful that was.”

Inside Dolly Parton’s NBC Christmas Special

In 2022, Parton brought holiday magic to fans with Dolly Parton’s Magic Mountain Christmas, a heartwarming NBC special filmed at her iconic Dollywood theme park. The movie followed Parton on a festive journey to rediscover the true meaning of Christmas—complete with visits from the three wise men.

The special earned two Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Contemporary Costumes.

Explaining her inspiration for the project, Parton told People, “I just felt like it was time to do another special with great music, comedy, and meaningful moments—something to entertain people and let them escape for a little while.”

She added, “Magic, to me, is lifting out of yourself and your troubles, even for a moment. If one song can do that, then that’s magical. The idea of making things uplifting is magic in itself.”
