A bride-to-be took to Reddit to ask a burning question: am I being unreasonable? In the popular subreddit ‘AITAH’ (Am I The Asshole), she shared her story.

She explained that she and her fiancé sent a list of rules to their wedding guests. Soon after, they started receiving cancellations.

To avoid being labeled a ‘bridezilla,’ she clarified that her fiancé had equally contributed to the rules and was fully supportive of them.

Then she went on to outline each rule individually.

The couple wanted to have an ‘unplugged ceremony.’ Guests were not allowed to have phones with them during the ceremony and the dinner that followed unless it was a ‘huge’ emergency. While guests understood no phones during the ceremony, they found the rule against using phones during dinner excessive.

Some guests, particularly those leaving their children at home, argued they needed phones to check on their kids. She told them that if she made an exception for them, she’d have to make it for everyone. She wrote, “Checking with your kids is not an emergency. If something serious happens, you’ll know.”

The couple also enforced a strict color scheme and dress code. Guests were required to wear only black, with women in dresses and men in tuxedos. No exceptions were allowed. Her aunt, who had recently emerged from a period of mourning and had resumed wearing more colorful clothing, was not exempt, even though she said wearing black made her feel depressed. Similarly, her future sister-in-law, who has body dysmorphia and always wore pants for comfort, was not granted an exception either.

The couple ordered bridesmaid dresses months in advance and instructed their bridesmaids to maintain their weight, whether that meant eating less or more.

She mentioned that her mother was furious about these rules, telling the bride her wedding was doomed from the start. Her bridesmaids also threatened to drop out, and many wedding guests began canceling at the last minute.

Her maid of honor’s daughter was supposed to be the flower girl, but this plan fell apart. The bride requested that the flower girl stay at a hotel with a babysitter during the ceremony. The maid of honor disagreed and decided to leave her daughter with her mother instead, given that the wedding venue was a four-hour drive away.

Despite the bride’s preface and warning, people still considered her and her fiancé to be completely unreasonable, labeling them as the ‘assholes.’

Many pointed out that while weddings can be tailored to the couple’s wishes, guests are not obligated to comply with their rules and have every right to decline the invitation.

Overall, the consensus on Reddit was that the couple was being unreasonable in their demands.
