Hannah Harper Stuns Judges With Soulful “Ain’t No Grave” on American Idol

Hannah Harper delivered one of her most memorable performances yet on American Idol, taking the stage with a fiery and emotional rendition of “Ain’t No Grave.” The powerful song—famously recorded by Johnny Cash as well as Bethel Music and Molly Skaggs—helped Harper continue her journey in the competition as she fought for a coveted spot in the Top 14.

Before stepping onto the stage, the 25-year-old stay-at-home mother of three opened up about how meaningful it was to have her family with her in Hawaii during the performances. Her husband, Devon, and their three young sons were there cheering her on.

“It’ll be surreal to be up on stage and see my kids,” Harper shared with producers. “All of it feels like a dream to be able to share this with them. Everyone’s so happy to be here.”

Harper said the trip itself was a special experience for the whole family. The boys enjoyed everything from colorful hair makeovers to meeting Mickey Mouse.

“They got their hair a whole bunch of different colors and it was all crazy and fun,” she said. “They got tatted up and had a meet and greet with Mickey. It was a sweet experience. I’m just soaking it all in.”

Mentors Encourage Harper to Step Outside Her Comfort Zone

Ahead of her performance, Harper met with celebrity mentors Brad Paisley and Keke Palmer to prepare for the next round. During their session, she reflected on her first Hawaii performance during the “Ohana Round.”

“‘Ohana Round was incredible,” Harper said. “It was exciting, but also terrifying. I’m not used to not having my guitar in my hands.”

Known for her bluegrass roots, Harper typically performs while playing guitar. However, for this round she challenged herself to leave the instrument behind and focus entirely on her stage presence.

Palmer applauded the decision, saying it showed Harper’s willingness to grow as an artist.

Paisley also praised her voice, telling her, “Your voice is everything I love about this style of music.”

Both mentors encouraged her to focus less on choreography and more on connecting emotionally with the audience.

“Think about getting the audience engaged,” Palmer advised. “Capture the feeling you have when your family is watching.”

During the mentoring session, Harper’s three sons briefly joined her, giving the singer a calming moment before the big performance.

“Getting to have that moment with my family just to breathe for a second calms all your anxiety,” she said.

Harper added that the experience has been about growth—not only for herself but also for her children to witness.

“I hope I’m showing my boys that no matter how old they are, be open to learning and just be resilient,” she said.

A Performance That Left The Judges Impressed

When Harper finally took the stage, she delivered a powerful, gospel-tinged rock performance of “Ain’t No Grave.”

Her commanding delivery immediately grabbed the judges’ attention.

Lionel Richie praised her storytelling ability during the performance.

“When you can actually be the storyteller, sometimes you go from singing to preaching,” Richie said. “That’s when you know you’ve got everyone’s attention. You did a great job.”

Keke Palmer also applauded Harper’s authenticity and presence.

“You don’t have to do what anybody else does,” Palmer said. “When you started singing and pointing at us, you were commanding the stage. We were locked in. It was excellent and very moving.”

Luke Bryan joked that Harper may have even created a new genre with the performance.

“I think you started a new genre—Resurrection Rock,” Bryan said with a smile.

He went on to call the performance his favorite of Harper’s so far.

“I love the whole performance. Your voice is so easy on the ears, and now we’re seeing more power behind it,” Bryan said. “You’re showing me you’re ready to branch out and grow. Definitely my favorite performance I’ve seen you do.”

Carrie Underwood also praised Harper’s song choice and powerful vocals.

“Your voice gave me chills the entire time,” Underwood said. “We got a glimpse of the fire inside you, and I hope we see more of that as this journey continues.”

Underwood even said Harper reminded her of herself during her own American Idol journey back in 2005.

“Try not to overthink what you’re doing on stage,” she advised. “Just tell the story.”

Harper’s Journey So Far

Fans first discovered Hannah Harper during her now-viral American Idol audition, where she performed an original song called “String Cheese,” inspired by her struggles with postpartum depression. The heartfelt performance moved Carrie Underwood to tears and prompted Luke Bryan to compare Harper’s voice to Dolly Parton.

Since then, Harper has continued to impress throughout the competition.

During Hollywood Week, she performed “A Little Past Little Rock” by Lee Ann Womack, earning a place in the Top 30. Later, she honored her late grandfather with an emotional performance of “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill.

Now, Harper continues competing for a spot in the Top 14 as the remaining contestants perform from Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa in Hawaii, guided by mentors Brad Paisley and Keke Palmer.
