Why John Foster Is the Teen Voice America Can’t Stop Talking About

At just 18, John Foster is emerging as one of the brightest stars of American Idol Season 23. With his soulful voice, humble charm, and small-town roots, the Louisiana native is captivating fans across the country — and after earning a spot in the Top 10, his momentum shows no signs of slowing down.

Here are three powerful reasons why John Foster isn’t just a contestant — he’s a rising star with a story worth watching.

From a Small Town with a Big Heart

Born and raised in Addis, Louisiana, a close-knit town of fewer than 7,000 people, John grew up surrounded by community and tradition. His family owns Benoit’s Country Meat Block, a cherished local spot known for its Cajun specialties — and his entire hometown has rallied behind him.

His grandmother, Verbie Benoit, spoke to The Advocate with pride and emotion:

“Every week, it’s better and better. I didn’t know he had more talent to show us, but he does. I pray for him—not just to win, but for God to stay with him. He’s just that kid.”

More Than Music: A Future in Medicine

While John’s musical journey is taking off, he’s also deeply committed to another passion — helping others through medicine. He was co-valedictorian of his high school class and is now studying biology at LSU, with plans to become an oncologist.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, he shared:

“Whether I decide to pursue medicine or music full-time, I will always be involved in fighting for a cure.”

Balancing academic excellence with a blossoming music career takes discipline and heart — and Foster shows he has both in abundance.

Carrie Underwood Calls Him “A Proud Mom Moment”

During “Iconic Idol Moments” week, John delivered a stunning cover of “I Told You So” — a song made famous by Carrie Underwood and Randy Travis.

“This is my way of saying, ‘I love you, Carrie. Thank you for all the support,’” John told the audience.

Carrie, watching from the judge’s panel, was visibly moved:

“I’m blushing!” she smiled.

Later, in an interview with People, she said:

“He reminds me of my oldest son—I just feel like a proud mom when he sings. He doesn’t even know how good he is.”

John responded with grace:

“It was an honor to pay tribute to Carrie. She’s been my voice on the panel, and I just wanted to show her the respect she deserves.”
