Vince Gill Releases Extended Version of “Go Rest High on That Mountain” With Long-Awaited Third Verse

The Heartbreaking Story Behind “Go Rest High”

When Vince Gill released “Go Rest High on That Mountain” in 1995, the song quickly became one of the most emotional and enduring country ballads of all time. What fans may not know is that the song was born out of heartbreak.

Gill began writing “Go Rest High” after the death of country singer Keith Whitley in 1989. But it wasn’t until tragedy struck closer to home that he was able to finish it. In 1993, Gill’s older brother, Bob Coen, passed away from a heart attack. In his grief, Gill returned to the song, finishing the lyrics and releasing it two years later.

The track became an instant classic, earning Gill two Grammy Awards—Best Country Song and Best Male Country Vocal Performance. More importantly, it touched millions of hearts, becoming a universal anthem of comfort in times of loss.

A Song That Comforts Generations

Over the years, “Go Rest High” has become Gill’s go-to tribute for fallen friends and fellow artists. One of his most unforgettable performances came in 2013 at George Jones’ funeral at the Grand Ole Opry House. Gill was so overcome with emotion he struggled to sing at times, leaning on his guitar and his dear friend Patty Loveless, who carried the harmony.

Loveless, along with Ricky Skaggs, also lent her voice to the original studio recording—helping to cement the song’s timeless legacy.

The Long-Awaited Third Verse

For three decades, fans have known “Go Rest High” as a two-verse masterpiece. But those who have attended Gill’s concerts over the years know there’s more—an additional verse he’s only ever performed live.

Now, in honor of the song’s 30th anniversary, Gill has officially released an extended version that includes that elusive third verse.

On September 12, 2025, Gill shared the news on social media:

“30 years ago, Vince Gill released ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain.’ Today, he released the extended version with the third verse you’ve only been able to hear live… until now.”

A Historic Performance at the Emmy Awards

Fans won’t have to wait long to hear the extended version live on a national stage. Gill will perform the song alongside Lainey Wilson during the “In Memoriam” segment of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 14.

This pairing—Gill, the veteran voice of comfort, and Wilson, one of country’s fastest rising stars—promises to be a poignant and unforgettable moment.
