Susan Boyle’s Triumphant Newcastle Comeback: Fans Shout ‘We Love You’ During Emotional ‘I Dreamed a Dream’

On an unforgettable evening in Newcastle, England, Susan Boyle received a rapturous standing ovation at the debut of a musical celebrating her extraordinary story. The production chronicles the tale of the Scottish woman who skyrocketed to stardom in her late 50s after a breathtaking performance on a radio talent show in 2009.

Although Susan did not portray herself in the production, she made a special cameo at the show’s conclusion, performing two songs—one of which was her signature hit, “I Dreamed a Dream.” Clad in a stylish red ensemble and debuting a polished new look, Susan enthralled the audience, who responded with resounding cheers of, “Susan, we love you!”

Few songs reflect Susan Boyle’s story of beating the odds as powerfully as “I Dreamed a Dream.” This moving ballad from Les Misérables—the celebrated musical based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel—follows Fantine, a struggling young mother who has just lost her job. In this moment of despair, she sings about her vanished dreams and the harsh truths of her life.

With lyrics that mourn lost youth and shattered hopes, the song strikes a profound chord. Composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg, it features French lyrics by Alain Boublil and an English adaptation by Herbert Kretzmer. The piece opens with Fantine recalling a time when love was exhilarating and the future seemed boundless—before everything fell apart.
