Scotty McCreery’s Emotional Take on Kris Kristofferson’s “Why Me, Lord” Is Leaving Country Fans Speechless
Fifteen years after stepping onto the American Idol stage and changing the course of his life, Scotty McCreery is looking back on the journey — and one song on his new album feels especially personal.

McCreery has never forgotten the artists who paved the way before him. Throughout his career, he has continued to put his own stamp on beloved country classics, paying tribute to the voices and songs that helped shape the music he loves.
Now, he is doing it again with one of Kris Kristofferson’s most powerful songs.
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of his American Idol victory, McCreery released his retrospective album 15 on July 17, 2026.
The album brings together nine of his previous hits, including “Five More Minutes” and “This Is It,” along with the new song “Been a Good Run” and three carefully chosen covers.
But the closing track may be the one that carries the most emotion.
McCreery recorded Kristofferson’s “Why Me, Lord,” a song originally released as simply “Why Me” in 1973.
Kristofferson’s recording became one of the biggest country hits of that year, reaching No. 1 on the Hot Country Singles chart and No. 16 on the all-genre Hot 100. The song would go on to become a country standard, recorded or performed by artists including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and many others.
For McCreery, however, recording the song wasn’t simply about revisiting a classic.
It was about looking back at everything that has happened since that young singer first walked onto the American Idol stage 15 years ago.
According to the album’s press release, “Why Me, Lord” sums up how McCreery feels about the last 15 years.
And once you hear him sing it, that meaning becomes easy to understand.
There is a sense of gratitude throughout his performance — gratitude for the career he has built, the people who helped him along the way, and the incredible journey that began with one television audition.
McCreery doesn’t try to overpower the song.
Instead, he lets the emotion sit in his voice.
That’s what makes his version so moving.
And there’s an especially meaningful full-circle moment on 15: the album also features McCreery recording “Your Man” with Josh Turner — the same song that McCreery performed when he first introduced himself to the country music world.
Fifteen years later, the song that helped start his journey has become part of a celebration of everything that came afterward.
McCreery has gone from a young American Idol contestant singing a country classic to an established artist paying tribute to the legends who inspired him.
And with “Why Me, Lord,” he closes 15 with a song that sounds less like a performance and more like a heartfelt thank-you for the journey.
After 15 years, Scotty McCreery has plenty to celebrate — and this emotional Kris Kristofferson cover may be his most heartfelt reflection yet
