Dolly Parton’s Music Carried a Little Girl Through 858 Days of Cancer Treatment Now Her Family Is Giving Back

At just three years old, Pearl Monroe Tucker was facing something no child should ever have to endure.

In 2019, Pearl was diagnosed with leukemia. Her treatment lasted 858 long days, and the pain became so severe that there were times when she could no longer walk.

But during some of those hardest moments, a familiar voice filled the room.

Her father, a television anchor in North Carolina, discovered that Dolly Parton’s music could help calm his little girl during bath time. Songs like “9 to 5,” “Jolene,” and “Love Is Like a Butterfly” became part of their routine.

For Pearl’s family, the music became more than entertainment.

It became comfort.

“It was an amazing healer,” her father recalled.

And there was another little piece of Dolly’s kindness arriving at their home.

Through Dolly’s Imagination Library, books continued showing up for Pearl throughout her treatment. She couldn’t go to school. She couldn’t see her friends. But she could still open a new book and escape into another world for a little while.

Then came the day her family had been praying for.

On January 30, 2022, Pearl took her final pill. She later rang the hospital bell on her sixth birthday — a beautiful moment marking the end of a journey that had taken up so much of her young life.

But Pearl’s story didn’t end there.

Her family decided to turn everything they had received during those difficult years into something they could give to other children.

They started a library of their own — filled with comforting books for children battling cancer, hoping to give young patients the same sense of escape, hope, and comfort that books gave Pearl.

What began with a little girl finding comfort in Dolly Parton’s songs and books became something much bigger.

A family endured the unimaginable… and chose to answer it with kindness
