Sally Field Gets Choked Up Remembering Dolly Parton In Emotional Emmy Speech

There are some friendships that time and distance can never erase. Sally Field proved that on the Emmy stage when she took a moment to remember her longtime friend Dolly Parton — and her words were deeply emotional.

During the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday night, September 14, the ceremony paused to honor beloved stars who had recently passed away. Among them was Dolly, whose death on August 25 left fans, friends and fellow entertainers heartbroken.

Before Reba McEntire took the stage to perform in Dolly’s honor, Sally Field stepped forward to remember the woman she had known for decades.

“If there are truly angels on earth, then we just lost one,” Field said.

It was a simple sentence, but it immediately captured what Dolly meant to so many people.

Sally Field and Dolly’s Friendship Goes Back Decades

Field and Dolly first became friends while working together on the beloved 1989 film Steel Magnolias. They spent long days together during filming, forming the kind of bond that can happen when a cast becomes almost like a family.

Years later, life took them in different directions, and they lived far apart. But Field made it clear that the distance never changed how she felt about Dolly.

She remembered her friend as genuine, humble, supportive and incredibly funny — while admitting that she didn’t fully understand at the time just how extraordinary Dolly’s influence would become.

Field said Dolly was not only a giant as an artist, but also as a human being.

She highlighted Dolly’s humanitarian work and the difference she made in the lives of countless people, particularly in her beloved Tennessee.

Then came a deeply personal goodbye.

“God bless you, Dolly Parton, my friend,” Field said, before making it clear that her love for Dolly would never disappear.

After Field’s emotional tribute, she introduced Reba McEntire.

Reba appeared onstage to honor Dolly through music, performing Dolly’s “Appalachian Memories” as images celebrating Dolly’s life played behind her.

For viewers, it was a powerful combination: one longtime friend speaking about the woman she loved, followed by another longtime friend singing her music.

And the emotion didn’t end when the cameras stopped rolling.

Sally Field Struggled to Hold Back Tears

After the ceremony, Field spoke with reporters about what it meant to be part of the tribute.

She admitted that the experience was difficult because actors spend so much time learning how to create emotion on screen — but this time, she was desperately trying not to cry.

As she talked about Dolly, Field became visibly emotional.

She remembered how closely the Steel Magnolias cast lived and worked together during filming. They spent nearly every day together, went shopping together and even made trips to Walmart as a group.

Field described the experience as being almost like going into battle together — the kind of experience that creates lifelong bonds.

And although she and Dolly weren’t able to remain as close over the years as Field would have wanted, she never stopped loving her.

That may be what made her Emmy speech so touching.

Dolly wasn’t simply a colleague from an old movie.

She was a friend Field carried with her for decades.

And standing on that stage, Field made sure the world knew just how much that friendship meant.

“An angel on earth.”

For Sally Field, that was Dolly
