Robert Irwin Stuns in Dancing With The Stars Season 34 Premiere

Dancing With The Stars Season 34 kicked off Tuesday night (September 16), and one of the most buzzed-about performances came from Robert Irwin — son of the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. The 21-year-old Aussie zookeeper is carrying on his family’s DWTS legacy, following in the footsteps of his sister Bindi, who won Season 21.

A Wild Debut

Paired with professional dancer Witney Carson, Robert made his debut with a high-energy jive to Steppenwolf’s rock anthem “Born To Be Wild.” True to form, Robert wore khakis — but with a twist. Midway through the dance, he ripped away his shirt to reveal a jungle-print top that matched Witney’s costume, sending the crowd into cheers.

The bold performance immediately became one of the night’s highlights, showcasing Robert’s adventurous spirit and sense of fun.

Judges’ Reactions

The judges were quick to shower Robert with praise.

  • Derek Hough called it “the best first dance I have ever seen on this show.”

  • Bruno Tonioli added, “That wasn’t good, Robert. It was great!”

Their strong scores tied Robert and Witney for first place on opening night. While no one will be eliminated this week, the scores will carry over into Week 2 when the first team faces elimination.

A Family Legacy

Watching proudly from the audience was Robert’s sister, Bindi Irwin, who won the mirrorball trophy back in 2015. She attended with her daughter Grace, husband Chandler, and their mother Terri.

For Robert, the night was especially meaningful:

“I remember being a little kid coming into the ballroom, every live show, watching Bindi in such awe,” he shared. “She talked about this experience as being the closest she ever came to flying. And now to be here a decade later, it is such an honor.”

Facing His Fears

Though he wrestles with wildlife daily at the Australia Zoo, Robert admitted that the ballroom is a whole different kind of danger.

“I’ve never done anything like this. I’m terrified … in a good way.”

Robert Irwin’s infectious energy, family pride, and undeniable charisma made him an instant fan favorite. With Witney Carson by his side, he’s already proving he has the talent — and heart — to go far this season.
