Riley Green Pays Tribute to Sammy Kershaw With Heartfelt Acoustic Performance of “Yard Sale” Amid CMA Controversy!
Riley Green is making it clear that he stands behind Sammy Kershaw — and he’s doing it through music.
After Kershaw recently revealed that the Country Music Association had denied his request to walk the red carpet at the upcoming CMA Awards alongside his wife, several country stars came forward to show their support.
Now Green has found another way to express his admiration for the country music veteran.
While enjoying some time in Maui, Hawaii, the “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” singer picked up his guitar and performed an acoustic version of one of Kershaw’s classic hits, “Yard Sale.”

And the moment carries a little extra meaning considering everything that has happened over the past few days.
Sammy Kershaw Speaks Out About CMA Red Carpet Decision
The controversy began on Thursday, November 6, when Sammy Kershaw shared a statement on social media explaining that his request to attend the 60th Annual CMA Awards and walk the red carpet with his wife had been rejected.
Kershaw said he had been looking forward to attending the milestone celebration, especially because his busy schedule rarely allows him to participate in industry events.
He explained that he and his wife had already made arrangements, including adjusting his schedule, booking flights, and reserving a hotel.
However, after waiting several months for an answer, he was ultimately informed that he would not be permitted to walk the red carpet.
The news left the longtime country singer deeply disappointed.
“I love country music, but never in a million years would I think that a successful country music entertainer (and I’m not the only one) would not be able to walk the red carpet. It’s extremely hurtful, embarrassing and very disappointing,” Kershaw wrote.
His message quickly attracted attention from fans and fellow musicians who felt the country legend deserved recognition for everything he has contributed to the genre.
Riley Green Shows His Support in a Musical Way
Riley Green was among the artists who publicly defended Kershaw after the original announcement.
But he didn’t stop with a comment on social media.
While spending time in Maui, Hawaii, Green shared a video of himself playing an acoustic version of Kershaw’s 1991 hit, “Yard Sale.”
He accompanied the performance with a simple message:
“felt like pickin a little @sammykershaw this evening”
Sometimes a song says more than a long statement, and Green’s choice of Kershaw’s classic was a heartfelt way to show appreciation for the veteran singer.
The two artists also have a musical connection that goes back several years.
Riley Green and Sammy Kershaw Have Shared the Stage Before
Green and Kershaw previously performed “Yard Sale” together during Green’s 2022 “We Out Here Tour.”
Seeing Green return to the song years later makes this latest performance even more special for fans familiar with their connection.
Originally released in 1991, “Yard Sale” remains one of the memorable songs from Kershaw’s early country music career.
The track helped establish his place in ’90s country music, a decade in which he became known for his distinctive voice and a string of popular hits.
Green’s acoustic version brings the song back into the spotlight while giving fans another reminder of Kershaw’s lasting influence.
CMA Has Not Yet Publicly Responded
The 60th Annual CMA Awards are scheduled for November 18, 2026, at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
Kershaw’s manager previously explained that the CMA received an overwhelming number of artist requests for red carpet access and that the singer did not meet the organization’s updated criteria. He was reportedly offered the option of purchasing tickets, although seating with other artists could not be guaranteed.
As of the time of this report, the Country Music Association has not publicly responded to Kershaw’s remarks.
Meanwhile, the support from fellow musicians continues to show how much respect he has earned throughout his career.
And Riley Green’s simple acoustic performance of “Yard Sale” may be one of the most meaningful gestures yet — a reminder that great country songs, and the artists behind them, are never forgotten
