Jimmy Carter, Former President, Pays Tribute to Late Wife Rosalynn at Funeral, Arriving in a Wheelchair
|Cloaked in a sharp suit and wrapped in a blanket, 99-year-old Jimmy Carter was gently wheeled into the funeral of his late wife, Rosalynn, on Tuesday. Despite being in hospice care, he undertook a two-and-a-half-hour journey from Plains, Georgia, to Atlanta for the poignant event, taking a prominent seat at the front to bid farewell to his spouse of over 77 years.
Rosalynn’s remains had been transported to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum the day before the funeral. President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden were among the attendees, alongside former first ladies Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Melania Trump, and Laura Bush, all captured entering Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church in a solemn procession.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Chip Carter, the former president’s son, shared that his father had been by Rosalynn’s side during her final moments. Jimmy expressed his love for her and pride in the “wonderful things she had done” throughout her life. Renowned for her advocacy in mental health awareness and improved services for the mentally ill, Rosalynn fiercely fought against the stigma surrounding mental health.
On the day before her passing, November 18, Jimmy reportedly sought a private moment with his wife. Chip speculated that he might have been praying with her in their secluded chamber, where their hospice beds were arranged foot-to-foot, allowing them to share a final gaze.
