Grandson’s Graveside Rendition of Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain” Goes Viral

In one of the most heartfelt moments captured on video this year, a young man named Walker honored his grandfather in the most moving way possible. Standing beside his grandad’s grave, he delivered an emotional rendition of Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain.”

The video, posted on TikTok by Roger McMurray in late August 2025, quickly went viral — amassing more than one million views as of this writing. And once you hear it, you’ll understand why.

A Tearful Tribute

The clip shows Walker bowing his head, visibly gathering his strength before singing. His voice carried through the cemetery, rising in both grief and love as he sang Gill’s timeless ballad.

At times, Walker’s voice broke with emotion. He wiped tears from his face but refused to stop, pushing through the pain to honor his grandad in song. The performance was raw, vulnerable, and powerful — a tribute that surely would have made his grandfather proud.

Why “Go Rest High” Hits So Hard

Since its release in 1995, “Go Rest High on That Mountain” has become one of the most frequently performed songs at funerals. Vince Gill began writing the song in 1989 after the death of fellow country singer Keith Whitley but didn’t finish it until 1993 when his brother, Bob Coen, passed away from a heart attack.

Featuring Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless on harmony, the track climbed to No. 14 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. It went on to win Best Country Song and Best Male Country Vocal Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards.

Over the years, Gill has performed the song in memory of countless country legends, including Joe Bonsall, Loretta Lynn, and George Jones. His performance at George Jones’ funeral remains one of the most emotional moments in Opry history, as Gill broke down in tears mid-song while Loveless helped carry him through.

A Song That Lives On

Nearly 30 years after its release, “Go Rest High on That Mountain” continues to resonate deeply with families facing loss. Walker’s viral performance is proof that the song’s message of love, grief, and faith still reaches across generations.

For many, this wasn’t just a grandson singing at his grandfather’s funeral — it was a reminder of how music can bring healing in the most painful moments of life.
