George Jones’ Oldest Daughter Susan Smith Dies at 75 A Quiet Life Away From the Spotlight

Susan Marie Smith, the oldest daughter of country music legend George Jones, has died at the age of 75.

According to an obituary shared through George Jones’ official Facebook account, Susan passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in Spring Hill, Tennessee. She was born in Houston, Texas, on October 29, 1951.

Susan was George Jones’ daughter with his first wife, Dorothy Bonvillion. Their marriage ended around the time Susan was born, and Jones soon left to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps.

George Jones went on to have two sons, Bryan and Jeffrey, with his second wife, Shirley Ann Corley. He also had a daughter, Georgette Jones, with fellow country music legend Tammy Wynette.

While her father spent decades in the spotlight, Susan lived a much quieter life centered around her family.

Her obituary described her as “a devoted homemaker who cherished her family above all else.” She found happiness in the simple things, especially spending time with the people she loved. Reading and music were also passions that brought her comfort and joy throughout her life.

Susan is survived by her husband, Harmon Smith, her children, Jennifer Stultz and Michael Smith, and her grandchildren, Laura Stultz, Jason Stultz and Charlotte Smith.

She is also survived by her stepmother, Nancy Jones; stepsisters Adina Estes and Sherry Hohimer; sister-in-law Anna Massey; and brother-in-law Ray Smith.

For fans who knew George Jones as one of country music’s greatest voices, the news is a reminder that behind the legendary career was also a family and a daughter who lived much of her life away from the public eye.

Susan may not have sought the spotlight, but she leaves behind a family who loved her and a life filled with the people and simple moments that meant the most to her.

May she rest in peace.
