Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” Was Inspired by a Wild Story Involving Miranda Lambert… and a Kangaroo

Only in country music could a story about Miranda Lambert, a kangaroo, and the police turn into a hit song. But that’s exactly how Ella Langley’s new single “Choosin’ Texas” was born.

On Friday, October 17, rising country star Ella Langley released her long-awaited single, “Choosin’ Texas.” Fans had been buzzing about the song for months after Langley teased it during her shows in Nacogdoches, Texas and Durant, Oklahoma.

Before performing the track live, Langley gave fans a behind-the-scenes peek at how the song came to life — and how none other than Miranda Lambert played a big role in writing it.

 A Writer’s Retreat, A Wild Story & A Kangaroo

“It was a year ago this month I got my first opportunity to write with her,” Langley shared from the stage.
“We were on one of those writer’s retreats — you take a couple of your favorite people, sit down for a few days, and just write songs. And hopefully some of them are good.”

During that retreat, Lambert started sharing a story that quickly took an unexpected turn.

“She told me she had a pet kangaroo,” Langley said, laughing. “She was driving down a dirt road — the kangaroo was in the back seat, the dog was in the front seat — and somehow she got pulled over. There was a lot going on!”

Apparently, the officer who stopped her couldn’t help but notice Lambert’s Texas plates — and that sparked the idea that would soon become “Choosin’ Texas.”

How “Choosin’ Texas” Was Born

Langley recalled that moment vividly:
“I was walking to the bathroom, and I started to sing to myself, ‘She’s from Texas, I can tell by the way he’s two-steppin’ around the room.’ And Miranda was walking behind me, and she said, ‘Wait a minute! The b***h he went with — she’s from Texas, I can tell!’”

That spontaneous exchange turned into a creative spark. Within 30 minutes, the two had written “Choosin’ Texas” — a bold, sassy anthem full of that signature Texas pride.

“It’s one of my favorite songs we got off the retreat that weekend,” Langley said. “And it’s my first song with Miss Miranda Lambert coming out.”
