At Her Husband’s Funeral, She Discovers a Heartfelt Note – A Story of Love and Redemption
|Christie felt trapped in a loveless marriage as her husband, Alex, was always consumed by work, leaving little time for her. After ten years of marriage without children, their careers became the focal point, straining their relationship.
On special occasions like Valentine’s Day and their anniversary, their routine of going to the same simple dinner at a restaurant felt more obligatory than romantic to Christie.
Christie longed to travel the world and immerse herself in new cultures, believing these adventures would strengthen their bond. However, Alex repeatedly dismissed her travel plans, deeming them too costly and unnecessary. He preferred saving for the future, promising they would travel after retirement.
Disheartened, Christie eventually fell out of love, feeling her life had become monotonous, revolving around eating and sleeping.
The situation worsened when Alex was diagnosed with a rare, terminal cancer. This heartbreaking news made it impossible for Christie to consider leaving him, despite her unhappiness.
One day, Christie received a call from the hospital while she was on her way home from work. “Mrs. Carson, your husband is in critical condition. You should come immediately,” the nurse informed her.
Despite the stagnation in their love, the thought of losing Alex at such a young age devastated Christie. He was still the man she had spent most of her adult life with, and the idea of his death made her stomach twist with grief.
Driving to the hospital, tears welled up in her eyes as she reflected on their relationship. She wondered how things might have been different if they had both made more effort to nurture their love.
When Christie arrived at the hospital, she found Alex connected to several machines, struggling to speak. Still, he made a valiant effort to convey his feelings.
“Christie,” he began, his voice faint and labored. “I know I didn’t show it enough, but I love you more than anything in the world. I realized at some point that you might not feel the same,” he said, pausing to catch his breath.
“I do love you, Christie, and I never expected to leave so soon. I had so many plans for us,” he continued, reaching for her hand. She clasped his hand tightly as he spoke.
“These are my last hours, and I want to spend them with you. When I’m gone, I’d like to take a piece of you with me. Please, at my funeral, put something of yours in my pocket so I can keep it forever.”
Christie, tears streaming down her face, nodded. Despite having fallen out of love, she still cared deeply for Alex. “I promise, Alex. Don’t worry about me. I’ll take care of myself. Rest easy and watch over me, okay? I’m glad you won’t be in pain much longer,” she reassured him.
Alex smiled weakly. “One more thing, could I be buried in my favorite blue suit? You know the one,” he asked.
“Of course,” Christie replied. “But let’s not think about that now. Let’s just be together,” she said, forcing a smile.
For the next few hours, Christie sat by Alex’s side. They listened to music, reminisced about their younger days, and sometimes sat in silence, simply enjoying each other’s presence. That night, Alex slowly drifted to sleep and passed away peacefully.
“Goodbye, Alex. Thank you,” Christie whispered as his heart monitor flatlined. Tears fell as she quietly wept, while the doctors and nurses removed the wires from his body.
At his funeral, Christie approached Alex one last time and carefully placed her locket in his coat pocket. It was the first gift he had given her in college, holding one of their earliest photos together. “I want to remember the good times, not the struggles at the end. Thank you for the wonderful years, Alex,” she said softly.
As she placed the locket in his pocket, she noticed a piece of paper inside. It read “For Christie” in Alex’s handwriting. She had never seen it before and realized Alex must have anticipated his death and left it for her. She tucked it into her pocket, deciding to read it later.
That night, when Christie got home, she prepared herself to read Alex’s note. It read:
Dear Christie,
I’ve loved you all my life, and I’m glad that it’s you I chose to spend it with. I’m sorry that in trying to prove my love to you, I forgot to live in the present, and because of that, we grew distant.
I remember when we were younger, you’d talk about your dream of opening a café by the ocean, where you could bake your delicious cakes and serve hearty meals. I never forgot about this. Every day, it was my motivation to work so hard. I’m sorry that my dedication took up all my time and led me to neglect you.
I was so close to seeing you fulfill this dream, Christie. In my safe, there is a bank passbook in your name. I’ve saved enough money for you to open your business. There’s also an envelope with documents for the purchase of a plot of land with a small cottage overlooking the sea. This is where you can open your café.
I didn’t plan to leave this earth so early. I wanted to open this café with you. I’m sorry I won’t be there to see it become a reality, but know that I am always with you in mind and spirit.
I love you with all my heart, eternally.
Alex
After reading the note, Christie was in tears. For the longest time, she believed Alex didn’t care about her or their relationship. She regretted not speaking to him about their issues and not working it out when she still had time.
“I’m sorry for letting go so quickly, Alex,” Christie sobbed. “I wish I could turn back time,” she cried.
That night, she prayed to Alex, sharing her regrets and wishes. Although it took time to heal from his death, she slowly got back on her feet and began planning the café opening, knowing it was what Alex would have wanted.
A few months later, she was ready to launch her café. She named it after her husband – Uncle Alex’s Seaside Café.
