Cody Johnson Makes RodeoHouston History With Carrie Underwood Surprise and Record-Breaking Crowd

Country music fans witnessed a night they won’t soon forget as Cody Johnson delivered a historic performance at RodeoHouston, breaking the all-time attendance record while also surprising the massive crowd with a special appearance by Carrie Underwood.

By the end of the night, 80,203 fans packed inside NRG Stadium had witnessed what many are already calling one of the most unforgettable moments in the history of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

A Surprise That Sent the Stadium Into a Frenzy

The night took an unexpected turn when Cody Johnson stepped to the microphone holding his caramel Gibson J-45 guitar and began singing the opening verse of I’m Gonna Love You, a duet originally released with Carrie Underwood on the deluxe edition of his album Leather.

At first, the choice seemed unusual. After all, it’s a duet — and Johnson was standing on stage alone.

But the crowd quickly sensed something was coming.

Even before the second voice appeared, excited screams rippled across the stadium. Then the spotlight cut across the stage — revealing Carrie Underwood, dressed in brown leather fringe and turquoise jewelry.

The reaction was immediate and deafening.

Underwood joined Johnson center stage, singing her lines and harmonizing with him as the crowd roared so loudly that it nearly competed with the stadium’s massive speaker system. The duet instantly became one of the defining moments of the entire concert.

A RodeoHouston Finale Like No Other

The scale of the show was just as impressive as the music.

Earlier that day, crews had completely transformed the lower level of NRG Stadium. In the short window between Tim McGraw’s RodeoHouston performance and the final concert of the season, workers removed over 4,000 cubic yards of dirt — roughly 600 truckloads — from the arena floor.

By the time fans arrived for the closing show on March 22, the iconic rodeo dirt had been replaced with a polished concrete surface surrounded by thousands of floor seats.

At the center stood RodeoHouston’s famous star-shaped stage, ready for a finale worthy of the record-breaking night that followed.

A Lineup Full of Texas Pride

This year’s RodeoHouston lineup celebrated a strong lineup of Texas and Houston-area talent.

Artists like Lizzo, Parker McCollum, and Forest Frank all hail from the Houston metro area, while stars such as Kelly Clarkson and Koe Wetzel represent other parts of Texas.

Cody Johnson may not be a Houston native, but his Texas roots run deep. He grew up in Sebastopol, a tiny town northeast of Huntsville with a population of just around 120 people — a place he still proudly calls home.

That small-town upbringing has remained a big part of Johnson’s identity, even as he has become one of country music’s biggest stars.

Randy Houser Sets the Stage

Before Johnson took over the stadium, Randy Houser kicked off the evening with his RodeoHouston debut.

Dressed in a black pearl snap shirt with white embroidery and a brown cowboy hat, the Mississippi-born singer delivered a tight six-song set that showcased his powerful, blues-tinged vocals.

Backed by fiery guitar solos and a confident stage presence, Houser warmed up the massive crowd and left many fans wishing his performance had been longer.

A Night for the History Books

Between the surprise duet with Carrie Underwood, the record-breaking crowd, and the massive production inside NRG Stadium, the final night of RodeoHouston became a moment that country music fans will talk about for years.

For Cody Johnson, the milestone carried even deeper meaning.

From growing up in a tiny Texas town to standing on stage in front of 80,203 roaring fans, the night represented the kind of dream that only a handful of artists ever achieve.

And judging by the thunderous applause that echoed through NRG Stadium, Houston was proud to witness it.
