Terry Bradshaw Delivers Emotional Rendition of Toby Keith’s “Don’t Let The Old Man In” at Brooks & Dunn Concert

NFL legend Terry Bradshaw paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend, Toby Keith, with a moving performance of “Don’t Let the Old Man In” during a surprise appearance at a Brooks & Dunn concert in Oklahoma.

How Terry Bradshaw Ended Up Singing at a Brooks & Dunn Show

Terry Bradshaw and country superstar Toby Keith shared a close friendship, one strengthened by their mutual battle with cancer. Sadly, Keith passed away on February 5, 2024, at the age of 62. In the wake of his passing, Bradshaw has taken every opportunity to honor his legacy.

Though best known for his storied NFL career and role as a sports commentator, Bradshaw is also an accomplished performer. He has dabbled in acting, country music, and even horse breeding. His connection to music runs deep, and he previously covered Keith’s poignant song, “Don’t Let the Old Man In.”

A Song with Deep Meaning

Toby Keith wrote “Don’t Let the Old Man In” after a conversation with Clint Eastwood, who later featured the song in his 2018 film The Mule. The song touches on themes of aging, resilience, and making the most of life—a message that resonated deeply with Keith, especially in his final years.

Keith’s most powerful performance of the song came in September 2023 at the People’s Choice Country Awards. Unbeknownst to fans, it would be his last televised performance, making the song even more meaningful in hindsight.

Bradshaw’s Surprise Performance in Oklahoma

After Bradshaw performed the song in Branson, Missouri, country star Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn reached out with an invitation. Brooks asked Bradshaw if he’d like to join them on stage for a tribute performance at their show in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Bradshaw eagerly agreed.

Reflecting on His Friendship with Toby Keith

Before performing, Bradshaw took a moment to share memories of his friendship with Keith and how they supported each other through their cancer battles.

“Toby and I would have a talk, and I’d say, ‘Hey, Bud, how are you doing?’ And he’d say, ‘Man, one day good, one day bad. God’s got a plan for me, I don’t know.’ And I said, ‘Well, hang in there, I’m praying for you.’ And he said, ‘I’m praying for you, buddy.’”

Now that Keith is gone, Bradshaw wants to ensure his music and message live on. He expressed his hope that he could do justice to the song and honor his late friend’s legacy.

Before launching into the performance, Bradshaw looked to the heavens and said:

“Toby, I love you, buddy. I hope I sing this song good for you.”

An Emotional Moment on Stage

With Brooks & Dunn backing him, Bradshaw delivered a powerful and emotional rendition of “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” The crowd hung on every word, fully immersed in the heartfelt tribute. As the final notes rang out, they responded with a warm round of cheers and applause, acknowleging both Bradshaw’s sincerity and the enduring impact of Keith’s music.
