SHE’S BACK AND SHE’S NOT PLAYING IT SAFE! Roseanne Barr Secretly Wrapped A Brand-New TV Sitcom… AND THE STAR-STUDDED CAST HAS EVERYONE TALKING!
Roseanne Barr is stepping back into the world of scripted comedy, and she’s doing it with a new series that promises to be just as bold and unpredictable as the show that made her a household name.

The comedian has wrapped production on Meemaw: A Modern Day Fable, an eight-episode family comedy filmed in Austin, Texas. Barr plays a Texas grandmother determined to give her granddaughter the most spectacular bat mitzvah the state has ever seen. But this is no ordinary family — the story follows a mixed-race family of preppers, setting the stage for plenty of unusual situations and sharp humor.
And Barr says she has no intention of playing it safe.
Roseanne Says Her Comedy Has Only Gotten Better
In an interview with Page Six, Barr compared the new series to her groundbreaking sitcom Roseanne, which originally ran from 1988 to 1997.
“It’s every bit as revolutionary as ‘The Roseanne Show,’ if not more, and my work has improved with time,” she said.
Barr also says the comedy will take aim at both sides of the political spectrum rather than focusing on just one audience. She explained that even though her daughters have different cultural and political perspectives, she still loves them — and makes room for jokes that reflect their views, too.
“I make fun of everybody ’cause everybody deserves to be made fun of who’s in power,” Barr told the outlet. “So, I’ve got some great jokes about Republicans that the lefties are gonna love. I’m an equal opportunity destroyer.”
That approach could give Meemaw the same kind of outspoken, family-centered humor that helped make Barr famous, although audiences will have to wait to see how the finished series delivers.

A Cast Packed With Familiar Faces
Barr won’t be returning to television comedy alone. The new series features a lineup of recognizable performers, including Randy Quaid as her husband and Omar Gooding as her son-in-law.
Drea de Matteo and Doug Jones are also part of the cast, while Jon Lovitz, Tony Hinchcliffe and Kim Congdon are set to make guest appearances.
Barr also revealed that comedian Mo’Nique helped her discover the young actress playing her granddaughter, Indy Bugg, a 12-year-old Instagram personality.
According to Barr, Mo’Nique encouraged her to check out the girl, saying she not only looked like Barr but acted like her, too. It sounds like the casting process may have uncovered exactly the kind of personality the role needed.
A Return After The Controversial End Of Roseanne

The project marks a significant new chapter for Barr, whose original sitcom revival was canceled in 2018 following a controversial tweet. The series continued without her under the title The Conners, which concluded in 2025.
Rather than returning to an established television network, Barr quietly began filming Meemaw in November 2025 after securing funding from private investors. The production was made as a union project, and all eight episodes have now completed filming.
For Barr, the series represents another opportunity to put her own comedic voice at the center of a family sitcom — this time with a new cast, a different family dynamic and a Texas setting.
Whether Meemaw: A Modern Day Fable will reach the cultural impact of Roseanne remains to be seen. But with a completed season, a recognizable cast and Barr promising humor aimed in every direction, her return is already drawing attention.
After years away from scripted family comedy, Roseanne Barr is ready to give audiences another look at her world — and this time, she’s doing it as Meemaw.
