Maggie Dunn’s Mother Reacts to John Foster’s Emotional ‘Idol’ Tribute The Heartbreaking Story Behind the Song That Moved America to Tears
|John Foster, a Louisiana native and LSU student studying to become an oncologist, recently earned his spot in the Top 14 on American Idol. But it wasn’t just his talent that captured hearts — it was the story behind his original song, “Tell That Angel I Love Her,” a tribute to two friends he lost in a devastating tragedy.
During his Top 20 performance, Foster shared the song he wrote just days after the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Maggie Dunn and 16-year-old Caroline Gill on New Year’s Eve 2022. Foster explained:
“I wrote this for the two sweet angels that were tragically taken from us. Maggie was one of my best friends, and Caroline was a good friend I wish I had known even more. Until we meet again. So much love to everyone.”
The emotional ballad tells the story of someone pleading with God to pass on a message to a loved one in heaven, with lyrics like:
“Each tear that falls on my guitar
Is a hug from afar
Lord, won’t you tell that angel I love her?
As y’all live in the stars.”
Maggie Dunn’s Mother Shares Her Reaction
After his moving performance, Foster pointed toward the audience — where Maggie Dunn’s mother, Erin Martin, stood with tears in her eyes, her hands pressed to her heart. It was a moment that left the entire room breathless. Later, in an interview with WBRZ, Martin reflected on the experience:
“My heart just melted,” she said, adding that she and John Foster’s friendship with Maggie began back in middle school. She even shared a touching photo of Maggie attending Foster’s first-ever gig, where he wore the same hat he donned during his Idol tribute. For John Foster to make the song at all, and then to perform it, it’s a tangible example of the light and love that Maggie left behind.”
Although no tribute can ever bring Maggie back, Martin hopes that Foster’s song — and the millions who heard it — will spark change.
“For a minute, those millions of people were thinking about my child. My hope is that those people will see that and read more about her story. Maybe one of those people will be someone who has the power to effect change when it comes to police pursuit policy.”
What Happened to Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill?
On New Year’s Eve 2022, tragedy struck when Addis Police Officer David Cauthron ran a red light while chasing a suspect, crashing into the car carrying Maggie Dunn, Caroline Gill, and Maggie’s brother, Liam Dunn. Maggie and Caroline were dead instantly. Liam survived but suffered severe injuries.
According to WBRZ, Officer Cauthron was driving 86 mph and never hit the brakes before the crash. He was sentenced to 32 years in prison, though 22 years were suspended. He will serve 10 years behind bars and is required to speak to law enforcement agencies and schools about his actions in an effort to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this heartbreaking loss. Maggie and Caroline’s memories live on — not only through those who loved them but also through songs, stories, and a shared hope for change.”
