Fiancé Throws a Fit After Woman Stands Firm on Her Inheritance
|A woman struggling with her five-year relationship sought advice online after a fiery argument with her fiancé over financial matters, leaving her questioning their future together.
In a raw post on Reddit’s “Am I The A*****e” thread, the 32-year-old, referred to as the Original Poster (OP), shared that she had recently gotten engaged to her 35-year-old partner. The couple had set a wedding date for May 2025. However, tragedy struck when her grandmother passed away shortly after the engagement.
OP explained that her grandparents had been financially successful, and her grandmother left her a substantial inheritance. That’s when the trouble began.
“When I told my fiancé, he was overjoyed—more than I expected,” OP wrote. “I shrugged it off, but later overheard him on a call with his friends saying, ‘I can finally pay off my credit card with that money! We can even plan that boys’ holiday!’ and laughing.”
Shocked, OP confronted him, asking, “What money?” to which he replied, “From your nan, babe.”
OP was furious, telling him the money was not his to spend and that he definitely wouldn’t be using it for a boys’ trip. She made it clear: “It’s not your money, it’s mine from my nanna.”
The confrontation escalated, and OP’s fiancé later berated her, claiming, “We’re getting married, you’ll be my financial burden. Any money you receive is mine too. You embarrassed me in front of my friends, giving them false hope of a holiday.”
Upset, OP left the house and stayed with a friend. She ended the post by asking if she was in the wrong.
Her story sparked an outpouring of support from Reddit users. One commenter said, “He’s already treating you as a burden and planning to spend your inheritance. You’d be crazy to marry him.”
Another warned, “This is a huge red flag. He feels entitled to your money and wants to use it for something that excludes you. You deserve better.”
A third user added, “Your grandparents gave you more than money; they gave you the clarity to see who this man really is. Run.”
