Famous Star Approached to Become ‘The Golden Bachelorette

A few months ago, ABC began the search for women to star in the upcoming season of The Golden Bachelorette, a spin-off of The Bachelor designed for older singles looking for love. Among the notable names approached by ABC was the legendary soap opera star Susan Lucci, renowned for her portrayal of Erica Kane on All My Children. However, despite the exciting offer, Lucci, now 77 years old, declined the opportunity to become the first Golden Bachelorette.

Susan Lucci has experienced profound personal loss, having tragically lost her beloved husband, Helmut Huber, in 2022. Helmut, an Austrian-born chef and businessman, passed away at the age of 84 after 52 years of marriage. They wed on September 13, 1969, and built a life filled with love, raising two children and enjoying the company of several grandchildren. Susan’s emotional journey was reflected in her interview with People magazine, where she shared that, while she admired the concept of The Golden Bachelor, she wasn’t ready to take on the role herself. She did admit to becoming a fan of The Bachelor series, even describing The Golden Bachelor as a “new addiction” for her.

Although Susan Lucci turned down the offer, ABC announced on May 14 that Joan Vassos, a contestant from the first season of The Golden Bachelor, would take center stage as The Golden Bachelorette for the upcoming fall season. At 61, Joan has openly shared her sincere desire for love and companionship. During a Bachelor Happy Hour: Golden Hour podcast, she expressed her hopes for the future, saying, “I really want love” and “I want to have somebody in my life.” Joan also shared her preference for a more personal approach to dating, feeling that life is richer when shared with someone special. She emphasized that the experience of The Golden Bachelorette felt more authentic to her than traditional dating apps.
