Devlin Hodges Just Shut Down the Haters After Lainey Wilson’s College GameDay Performance
Lainey Wilson stepped onto the College GameDay stage at LSU expecting to kick off the football season with a little country flair.
Instead, her performance sparked a wave of criticism online.
The country star opened ESPN’s 40th season with a live version of Big & Rich’s “Comin’ to Your City,” backed by the LSU marching band. While plenty of fans loved seeing Lainey bring her energy to the show, others were quick to tear the performance apart.

Some blamed the broadcast’s sound.
Others simply wanted the traditional College GameDay opening back.
And then the comments started getting brutal.
But Lainey wasn’t the only one watching.
Her husband, Devlin “Duck” Hodges, saw what was being said about his wife — and he wasn’t about to sit quietly.
When one X user questioned why anyone thought Lainey’s performance was a good idea, Devlin delivered a short but pointed response:
“Glad to see you purchased a blue check mark.”

That was it.
No long argument.
No angry paragraph.
Just one sentence — and the message was clear.
Devlin was defending his wife.
Of course, the backlash wasn’t the whole story.
Other fans rushed to Lainey’s defense, praising her performance and saying she brought exactly the kind of energy the season opener needed.
And Lainey herself didn’t appear to let the negativity slow her down.
In fact, she had something much bigger to celebrate that same day.
She announced that she will return as host of the CMA Awards, marking her third time hosting the ceremony and her second time taking on the job solo.
So while the internet debated a few minutes of television, Lainey was already moving on to the next chapter.
And maybe that’s the sweetest part of the story.
She has a husband who will step in when the criticism gets personal, fans who continue to stand behind her, and a career that’s clearly moving forward.
One performance may have divided the internet — but it certainly didn’t stop Lainey Wilson.
And Devlin made sure everyone knew he was standing right beside her.
