Carrie Underwood Returns for Her 14th Year of Sunday Night Football And She’s Bringing the Rock-Star Energy

It wouldn’t feel like Sunday night in America without Carrie Underwood.

For the 14th consecutive year, the country superstar is back opening NBC’s Sunday Night Football, once again bringing her powerhouse vocals to one of television’s most recognizable sports traditions.

Tonight, the spotlight turns to the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, but before kickoff, Carrie gets her moment to set the tone for the entire night.

And this year, she’s leaning even harder into her rock-star side.

The song remains the familiar “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” the iconic football anthem built around Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ 1988 hit “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”

But the visuals have gotten a fresh twist.

This year’s opening takes viewers on a journey with Carrie through a recording studio, a small club, and finally a packed stadium, creating the feeling that viewers are watching a country superstar living out her own rock-and-roll fantasy.

It’s a fitting evolution for an artist who has never been afraid to show her love for rock music.

Carrie has described the new opening as welcoming Sunday Night Football into her ongoing “rock-star fever dream.”

And after 14 years, she has certainly earned her place at the center of the tradition.

The history of the song goes back even further.

Pink originally performed the Sunday Night Football opening in 2006. Faith Hill took over from 2007 through 2012 before Carrie stepped into the role in 2013.

Since then, Carrie has made the opening unmistakably her own.

In fact, she has now performed it for longer than Pink and Faith Hill combined.

That kind of staying power is rare in television — especially for a performance that millions of viewers see year after year.

But Carrie continues to bring something new to it.

Her latest version blends country, rock, stadium energy and the unmistakable excitement of football season, making it feel less like a simple TV introduction and more like the opening number of a massive concert.

And then, after Carrie has fired up the crowd, it’s time for football.

Cowboys vs. Giants. Sunday night. NBC.

But for millions of fans, the night begins the same way it has for more than a decade:

Carrie Underwood takes the stage, the music kicks in, and everyone knows Sunday night has officially arrived.
