Rod Stewart, 81, Sparks Concern After Requiring Oxygen on Stage Following Mid-Concert Health Scare
Rod Stewart left fans deeply concerned after he nearly collapsed during a live performance in Utah, forcing crew members to rush an oxygen tank onto the stage as the legendary singer struggled to catch his breath.
The 81-year-old music icon was performing at the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre in West Valley City on June 19 when audience members noticed he appeared unsteady while singing his classic hit “Young Turks.” Stewart was seen leaning on stage equipment, barriers, and a support pole as he fought to finish the song.
When the performance ended, crew members quickly brought an oxygen tank onto the stage. Stewart took several deep breaths before reassuring the crowd and continuing with the concert. Although visibly shaken, he refused to end the show early and completed the remainder of the performance while seated in a chair.
Addressing the audience, Stewart admitted he had “dang near fainted,” but stayed true to his trademark humor by joking with fans despite the frightening moment.
West Valley City sits at an elevation of approximately 4,300 feet above sea level, where thinner air can make breathing more difficult—especially for older performers. Stewart’s representatives have not yet confirmed whether the altitude or another medical issue contributed to the incident.
Another Health Setback
The onstage scare comes after several recent health issues for the rock legend.
Earlier this month, Stewart canceled a concert in Chula Vista, California, after doctors diagnosed him with an acute upper respiratory infection that resulted in laryngitis. Medical professionals later ordered him to remain on strict vocal rest, leading to the cancellation of two additional performances scheduled for June 15 and 16 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Those cancellations sparked debate among fans after Stewart was photographed boarding a private jet less than a day later to attend a World Cup match. While some criticized the timing, others defended the singer, pointing out that watching a sporting event requires far less physical effort than delivering a full two-hour concert.
Despite the recent health challenges, Stewart has remained determined to perform whenever possible, underscoring his enduring commitment to the fans who have supported him throughout his decades-long career.
