Kelsea Ballerini Breaks Down in Tears While Singing About Her Beloved Dog Dibs

There are some songs an artist can sing a thousand times.

And then there are songs that suddenly mean something completely different.

That was the heartbreaking reality for Kelsea Ballerini on Friday night during her performance at the Barefoot Country Music Festival in Wildwood, New Jersey.

For the first time since losing her beloved dog Dibs earlier this year, Ballerini added her emotional song “Penthouse” back into her setlist.

She never made it through the verse.

The Lyric That Changed Everything

As Ballerini sang through the song, she reached a line that longtime fans instantly recognized:

“I bought the house with a fence, enough room for some kids, a backyard for Dibs.”

The moment the words left her mouth, the emotions became too much.

Ballerini paused.

She often referred to him as her “soul dog.”
