THE WORLD DOESN’T NEED A COVER SONG: Eric Church Delivers Powerful Graduation Speech At UNC That Students Will Never Forget

There is only one man who could walk onto a stage at Kenan Stadium, wearing his signature sunglasses with a guitar in hand, and turn a graduation ceremony into a soul-stirring revival. On May 9, the Chief himself, Eric Church, gave the 7,183 graduates of UNC a commencement speech they will never forget.

He didn’t just stand behind a podium. He showed them what it means to be an original.

The Six Strings of Life

In true Eric Church fashion, he tore up his written drafts and decided to speak from the heart. Using his guitar as a metaphor, he explained that life is held together by six pillars, just like the six strings on his instrument:

  1. Faith

  2. Family

  3. Heart

  4. Ambition and Resilience

  5. Community

  6. Your Sense of Self

He gave the graduates a powerful reality check: every single string will drift out of tune at some point. But according to Eric, that isn’t failure—it’s just living.

“The World Needs an Original”

The highlight of the night was his challenge to the Class of 2026. He reminded them that they were made uniquely and wonderfully.

“The world does not need another cover song,” he told the cheering crowd. “It needs an original.”

A Sea of Carolina Blue

To close out the historic evening, the stadium became a sea of Carolina Blue sunglasses worn in his honor. Eric struck the chords to “Carolina,” and for a moment, time stood still in Chapel Hill. It was raw, it was real, and it was pure Eric Church.
