Jane Fonda’s Powerful Speech: A Legacy of Activism and Boldness

Jane Fonda has long been no stranger to political controversy. Infamously dubbed “Hanoi Jane” after her 1972 photo sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun, she has faced significant public backlash throughout her career.

As far back as the 1960s, Fonda was a polarizing figure for her support of the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panthers, actions that drew ire from certain segments of society.

This past weekend, Fonda received the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Life Achievement Award and took the opportunity to address President Donald Trump indirectly during her speech.

Given the current tense political climate in the U.S., it’s no surprise that many celebrities are using their platforms to speak out. For the 87-year-old actress, the SAG Awards presented a perfect occasion to voice her opinions.

“Thank you, SAG AFTRA. Your enthusiasm makes this feel less like the twilight of my life and more like a ‘go girl, kick a**’ moment. I’m not done yet,” Fonda declared.

While she didn’t mention Trump by name, Fonda referenced Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of him in the upcoming 2024 series, The Apprentice. “Even if you dislike your character’s behavior, it’s crucial to understand and empathize with the traumatized person you’re portraying,” she said.

Fonda then championed the idea of ‘wokeness,’ asserting, “Empathy is not weak or ‘woke.’ It simply means you care about others. A lot of people are going to suffer from what’s happening and what lies ahead. We need a big tent to resist what’s coming.”

She emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, “Even if people hold different political views, we need to embrace our empathy, listen with our hearts, and welcome them into our tent. We will need that unity to effectively resist what lies ahead.”

Fonda’s remarks come during a tumultuous period in U.S. politics, with many anticipating chaos during Trump’s second term. His swift executive actions and contentious statements have raised concerns, particularly regarding his newly established Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk and his controversial alignment with Vladimir Putin in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
