“NCIS Showrunner George Schenck, A Key Creative Force, Passes Away at 82”
|George Schenck, the prolific writer and showrunner best known for his work on *NCIS*, has passed away at the age of 82. Schenck died on Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, according to a CBS spokesperson.
Schenck, who co-created the acclaimed CBS crime drama *NCIS* with Frank Cardea, was a central figure in the show’s first 15 seasons. He was also the creator of the 1982 CBS series *Bring ‘Em Back Alive*, which starred Bruce Boxleitner.
Mark Harmon, a star of *NCIS*, expressed his sorrow upon hearing the news. “I’m deeply sorry to learn of George’s passing,” Harmon said. “George and Frank’s dedication and professionalism profoundly impacted the show. I’m grateful for their teamwork and unity.”
Born on February 12, 1942, Schenck was the son of the late Aubrey Schenck, a noted film and TV producer. George earned his degree in screenwriting from the University of Southern California and later completed his master’s degree in the inaugural class of USC’s Film School’s new writer’s program. Following his education, he served in the US Navy before embarking on a writing career.
In the early years of his career, Schenck contributed to episodes of *The Wild Wild West*, *Branded*, *Hondo*, and *Bonanza*. He also penned scripts for films featuring Clint Walker, such as *Don’t Worry, We’ll Think of a Title* (1966) and *More Dead Than Alive* (1969).
Schenck’s collaboration with Frank Cardea began with several TV shows, including *Crazy Like a Fox*, *The Cosby Mysteries*, and *Pros and Cons*. However, their most notable work remains *NCIS*, where they co-wrote nearly 50 episodes starting from the show’s first season in 2003. After Gary Glasberg’s death in 2016, Schenck and Cardea were appointed as co-showrunners. Cardea continued on the show until 2022, while Schenck retired in 2018.
A tribute from a fan account on X (formerly Twitter) honored Schenck’s contributions: “Rest in peace, George. Thank you for your incredible work on *NCIS* and the entire franchise. Our thoughts are with his family, cast, and crew.”
Schenck’s passing follows the recent death of his wife of over 50 years, Virginia Schenck. He is survived by their two sons, Kirk and Jeff, as well as nieces Allison and Natalie, and grandchildren Aidan, Andrew, Ryan, Jordan, and Owen.
A private service will be held for Schenck’s family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the Writer’s Guild Foundation, which supports emerging writers.
