Willie Nelson’s “Last Leaf” Performance at Farm Aid Left No Dry Eyes

There are some performances that entertain you. And then there are performances that make you stop, listen, and think about everyone you’ve loved and lost.

Willie Nelson’s appearance at Farm Aid 2026 became one of those unforgettable moments when the 93-year-old country legend took the stage and delivered a deeply emotional performance of “Last Leaf.”

Nelson performed a 15-song set during the festival, including classics such as “On the Road Again,” “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground,” and “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.”

But it was “Last Leaf” that seemed to hit fans differently.

Willie Nelson’s Emotional “Last Leaf” Performance

Written by Tom Waits, “Last Leaf” tells the story of being the final one left standing after so many others have disappeared.

Nelson recorded his own version in 2024 as the lead single from his 76th solo album, Last Leaf on the Tree. The song already carried a powerful message, but hearing Nelson perform it at Farm Aid gave the lyrics an even deeper meaning.

At 93, Nelson has spent decades watching friends, fellow musicians and members of his generation come and go.

And the timing made the performance even more poignant.

Nelson’s Farm Aid appearance came just weeks after the death of his longtime friend Dolly Parton, who passed away at 80.

In a recent interview, Nelson revealed that he had spoken with Parton shortly before her death and had no idea she was seriously ill.

“I had no idea. I did an interview with her shortly before [she died]. She seemed fine.”

Those words make the emotional weight of “Last Leaf” feel even heavier.

A Night Full of Country Legends

Nelson’s entire Farm Aid set was filled with special moments.

He performed alongside several artists, including Neil Young, Lukas Nelson, Lily Meola, Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price and Turnpike Troubadours.

Young joined Nelson for “Are There Any More Real Cowboys?”, while Willie’s son Lukas joined his father for a performance of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe.”

As always, Nelson appeared with his trademark red bandana and his beloved guitar, Trigger, by his side.

But when he began singing “Last Leaf,” the atmosphere changed.

The performance felt intimate despite the massive festival setting — a legendary artist singing about being one of the last leaves still hanging on the tree.

One fan summed up the feeling perfectly after watching the performance:

“This song made me tear up. I was thinking of him and others we have lost from his era.”

That reaction captures why this performance resonated so strongly.

Willie Nelson has spent more than six decades creating music, and Farm Aid has been part of his story since he helped launch the original event in 1985 alongside Neil Young and John Mellencamp.

What began as a benefit concert during a devastating farm crisis grew into an ongoing organization supporting America’s family farmers.

And all these years later, Nelson was still standing on that stage, still singing, still carrying the stories of the people and generations that came before him.

“Last Leaf” wasn’t simply another song in a 15-song set. It felt like a reflection on a lifetime.

And judging by the emotional reaction from fans, it was a moment that will stay with them for a long time.
