Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop Host a Mini “Gilmore Girls” Reunion: ‘Ladies Who Lunch’
|The actresses starred as the iconic mother-daughter duo, Lorelai and Emily Gilmore, from 2000 to 2007 and reprised their roles in the 2016 Netflix revival of the series.
Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop enjoyed a delightful Gilmore Girls mini-reunion!
On Saturday, June 29, Graham, 57, took to Instagram to share a selfie with her former onscreen mother, Bishop, 80. In the snapshot, the “Parenthood” actress is seen smiling at the camera, dressed in a blue jacket, matching bucket hat, sunglasses, and a striped tee. Meanwhile, “Dirty Dancing” alum Bishop looks stylish in shades, a black jacket, and a silver necklace.
“Here’s to the ladies who lunch,” Graham captioned the post, quoting a lyric from Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company,” and added the hashtag “#Kelly.”
The onscreen mother-daughter duo most recently reunited in Netflix’s 2016 revival, “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.” They originally captured audiences as the old-money Gilmore matriarch Emily and her high-spirited daughter Lorelai in the CW’s beloved series, which aired from 2000 to 2007.
Earlier this year, Bishop shared with PEOPLE that she is reflecting on her extensive career in Hollywood with an upcoming memoir. She plans to pay tribute to the iconic series with the book’s title: “The Third Gilmore Girl.”
Graham has also reflected on the enduring popularity of “Gilmore Girls” in recent years. In 2021, she discussed how Netflix had revived interest in the show by streaming it on its platform, over two decades after its initial debut.
“It’s way more popular now. It wasn’t that popular when it originally aired,” the actress explained during an interview with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, commenting on the show’s resurgence on Netflix. “We were on opposite ‘Friends,’ so no one really knew we were on. It was like a miracle every year we got picked up. The people who liked it really liked it, but it wasn’t a big hit. It’s crazy. New generations keep watching it.”
“It’s fun because different groups of people, different generations are finding it. I just don’t want to get to the age where I’m frightening to children, where they’re like, ‘Where’s Lorelai? What happened?'” she added humorously.
Although the entire “Gilmore Girls” cast hasn’t been seen together since the 2016 Netflix revival, two of the series’ actors, Chad Michael Murray and Scott Patterson — who portrayed Rory’s prep school classmate Tristan and Lorelai’s main love interest Luke, respectively — reunited for a selfie in 2022.
“It’s a Luke/Tristan reunion at Sullivan’s Crossing,” Patterson shared on X, posting the duo’s selfie. “Annual Grey vs Blonde Homecoming Event! Who u voting for?”
Recently, series alum Keiko Agena spoke to PEOPLE about her time playing Lane Kim, and shared her complex feelings about returning to the role in 2016 — especially considering the ethnic disparity, as she played a Korean American character while being Japanese American.
“The best thing is to have a Korean American writer and a Korean American actor,” Agena, 50, remarked. “I don’t think that role, cast that way, would happen today. But back in 2000, it was a different era and I definitely wouldn’t have said no or removed myself from that situation.”
Agena also mentioned that she still regularly keeps in touch with two “Gilmore Girls” cast members: John Cabrera, who played Lane’s bandmate Brian, and Sean Gunn, who portrayed Kirk.
“There’s a kind of lovely nostalgia for that time, yet we’ve also grown so much since then,” Agena reflected. “I’ve attended both of their weddings. Our friendship is partly built on our ‘Gilmore Girls’ days and appreciation for that crazy time, and partly just like any other friendship based on a myriad of other shared experiences.”
